What's New: Key Stage 1 Christmas Play

The Early Years team put on a delightful performance of Cinderella at the end of Term 1. There was some strong acting performances from our talented youngesters, as well as plenty of singing and dancing from every student from the very youngest in Preschool 1 all the way up to Year 2. The students all had a fantastic time and thoroughly entertained the parents and all of their colleague from Primary and Secondary, who came to watch.

What's New: New prefect team appointed

Many congratulations to Noorjan Abdul, Vaishnavi Jognee and Precious Kakwaya on making their way through the rigorous application process to become Mwanza International School's first ever prefect team!

They join Faizaan Hussein, the first prefect confirmed, in a role with many facets including: acting as a role model for all students, liaising between the student body and faculty, assisting in the organisation of School events, and embodying the School ethos of Respect, Cooperation, Integrity, Perseverance, Responsibility and Kindness.

Well done to you all. We're looking forward to seeing you thrive as responsible and upstanding members of the MIS community.

What's New: MIS students shine in Burundi

Three MIS students were selected to represent Tanzania in the recent Africa Aquatics Zone III Championships in Burundi. Many congratulations to Delbert Kenemo, Ethan Makalla and Ibrahim Igoro, as well as to our very own Mr Ally, who was also selected to be one of the swim coaches for the Tanzania team.

Competing against students from Kenya, Uganda, Burundi and Sudan, Ibrahim came away with 1 gold and 2 bronze medals, and Ethan won a bronze too.

Well done boys, we're all very proud of you!

What's New: MIS sports teams debut in 2024 against arch rivals

November saw three school matches against local rivals Isamilo International School but would the skill and pluck of our students overcome their superior numbers?

Year 5 Football

The Year 5 football match was a tense affair, with both sides having many excellent opportunities. The score stayed at 0-0 until the final minute, when a stray Isamilo hand in the penalty box led to an MIS penalty, which was duly put away to seal a famous victory!

Senior Girls' Netball

In their first match after forming a team the Year 10 girls put up a brave and spirited fight against a battle-hardened Year 10 and 11 Isamilo side, thirsty for victory prior to heading off on their sports tour. Our girls came out of the blocks like tigresses, shooting to a 9-3 lead by the end of the second period. But a lack of match fitness showed towards the end of the game, alongside a definite increase in the physicality of the Isamilo squad, meant a strong comeback in the latter stages. However, tenacious MIS held off the charge and emerged victorious in the rain-dappled court to win 14-9. A memorable victory that will surely be the talk of many a lunch break to come.

Year 7/8/9 Football

With numbers severely depleted and some key players absent, could this mottley crew of individual geniuses gel to become a team to challenge the might of Isamilo? A disjointed first half provided a few good chances for our boys but the lion's share fell to Isamilo, with shot after shot being fended off. Alas, the relentless onslaught inevitably led to our final defences being breached and Isamilo bounded to a 3-0 lead by the end of the first period. Not dispirited for a second, our resilient yet tired men fought valiantly back from the brink with two unconventional goals in the second half. However, the inexorable pouring of time's sand was not on our chaps' side and, although on the ascendency in the second half, nothing was to stop the Isamilo juggernaut. The match ending 3-2 in favour of the blues.

What's New: MIS house swimming gala makes a splash

The annual MIS house competition swimming gala took place on the last day of the half term. All students from every year groups took part in the gala to fight for vitory for their house: Red, Yellow or Blue.

The gala was split into two parts, the first being the younger Key Stage 1 students (Preschool, Reception and Year 1 classes) showing off their (often newly found) swimming skills. The second part was for Years 2 to 10, where the main competition took place. Each student was expertly matched by our swimming coach Mr Ally to ensure we had some nailbiting competitions over a variety of distances and strokes.

The scores were very tight going into the last 4 races: the mixed Medley and Freestyle relays. An incredible performance from the Blue team - winning every relay - meant they came away the overall winners. Many congratulations to the Blues but also well done to every single swimmer who gave it their all for the good of their team. There were some gutsy and exciting performances that provided a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon's entertainment to spectators and competitors alike.

What's New: A mountain of a challenge!

The children's charity GRUSCO, which is run by one of our teachers, hosted their first ever fun run this month at MIS. Over 100 children and adults took part in this exciting and challenging morning of physical activity and camaraderie.

The route started with a gruelling climb up Capri Point from MIS, then taking in the stunning view over the lake before descending fast towards Bismarck Rock, where the 2.5km route and the 5km route divided. The 2.5km headed back to Mwanza International School and the 5km toured around the centre of town before heading back via Hotel Tilapia.
